A CINQUAIN is a 5 line poem with a basic structure ie: word (title) 2 words (describing the title); 3 words (short action); 4 words (phrase expressing a feeling about the word); synomyn for title e.g. Wetland, mucky gucky up and down, scared of monsters, squishy. BRIEF IDEAS ON PROCESS OF PRODUCING A CLASS ENTRY - *Approach this as a whole class activity; Introduce the Topic,; Brainstorm vocabulary; Encourage students to write down throughts; Get away from notion that poetry has to rhyme which enables students to get across their message; All class members write lines and the class chooses favourites to be submitted; Illustrations (original) may be submitted. The theme for 2010 was "Nature at Risk" e.g. choose a bushland bird from a region that is threatened, write a poem or story about that bird, in what ways it is threatened and how it can be saved or, you might like to take a "birdseye view" writing from the bird's perspective (refer to Schools Section) EXAMPLE OF HAIKU - "This cloudy evening/I sit by the window sill/As the wind howls away Sunlight warms my face/Feeling like a cuddly hug/So I think of you Autumn leaves fall down/All of the trees look lifeless/No green left in sight" (contributed by Brendan Milner (14 yrs), Lilydale High School, Vic.
